There was a lot of hype when the Xbox One was first announced. During the press conference, one of the features highlighted was the Xbox One's ability to create persistent "open world" games. However persistent "open world" games have been around since 1997 with the release of Ultima Online. Gaming consoles are claiming 20 year old PC features as new innovation. While there is not argument, "open world" is the future of gaming. Next generation consoles aren't as innovative as they advertise. The PC is the only true next generation console. With better graphic and faster computing, It also provides all the features you'll find on a next generation console. Its can find games while playing something else, captures video of your greatest gaming moments and host Skype calls as you play. It can do all this while requiring no subscription fee for online content. So if you are looking to buy a next generation console, buy a PC.
Xbox One Announcement: Press Conference
It is slightly depressing these "next generation" consoles lack innovation. The PS3 was a miniature supercomputer. The PS4 and Xbox One, on the other hand, lack the same innovative leap in performance. Both systems claim that cloud computer more than makes up for the poor performance, assuming you have a quick enough internet connection. I believe that "last generation" consoles are still ahead of the current consoles in terms of creativity and innovation.
ReplyDeleteIt may just be me getting old, but I think gaming technology is slowing down. It passed its golden age. It still gets better each year, but not by much.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I am seeing in "next-gen" consoles is better graphics. Unfortunately, these graphics don't seem to get that much better with every console.
ReplyDeletei think there needs to be some radical innovation. like a virtual reality.
ReplyDeleteI agree consoles are stealing ideas from the PC and calling them "new," but there is some convenience to not having to upgrade components on a console to accommodate the new technology for the next 8-10 years of the console's lifespan.
